In the Band by Jean Haus

In the Band

When family problems push Riley Middleton into giving up a percussion scholarship in
another state and attending college from home, her friends push her to try out for a local
rock band. Of course, Riley makes the band. She rules at the drums.

Riley soon finds out rock bands have a different dynamic than marching bands, especially
when each of her male band mates has a major ego and is a major player. Two of them
relentlessly flirt with her. The other—a dark, sexy rock god she can’t help being attracted
to— is a total jerk and pushes her to quit. She becomes determined to ignore his rudeness
and his hotness. Even if she was interested in jerks, a hook up would probably get her
booted out of the ego-ridden band, and playing keeps her sane. Behind the drums, the
world and her family’s troubles evaporate.

If she wants to stay in the band, Riley just has to ignore the growing sparks between her
and her band enemy. But as she gets to know the man behind the stage persona, ignoring
him proves to be more difficult than flowing through a time sig shift.

Excerpt :
I’m humming inside. I could blame it on the alcohol but it’s him. His eyes so dark they’re almost black. Lips so full they draw me to them. The sexiness always dripping from him somehow hums into me. And that word. Beautiful. I want to kiss him. Badly. Desperate for him, I lurch forward. Completely uncoordinated within my rush of desire—and perhaps too much alcohol—I collide with the side of his head.
“Ow!” I rear back holding my forehead.
“Shit!” Romeo says at the same time. “What the hell was that?” Leaning back, he rubs his temple. “You trying to kill me?”
My face burns as he watches me. My red skin must give him a clue at what I was trying to do because comprehension slowly enters his gaze.
Still rubbing his temple, he says, “I can’t figure you out. Every time I think I have…” His eyes cloud with indecision.
Turning redder by the second, I’m about to jump off the bed and run from the room when he reaches out and catches my chin in a tender grip.

Jen's  Review

Now I have 2 books in my favorites folder for the first of the year :)

LOVE this story! I am a huge fan of Rock Star type books and this was perfect!

Riley has had a pretty good life, up until recently when her dad decided to run off with his new girlfriend. After 20 years of marriage, her mom shut down. She didn't know how to deal with life anymore without her husband. Unfortunately, That mean Riley had to step and and take care of her 8 year old little sister, along with the duties of the house until her mom could sort out her feelings..

Time goes on and her feelings aren't getting sorted out....

Riley knows first hand about Sacrificing your happiness for the sake of others. An out of state collage on a full ride scholarship doing the one she she loves the most. Playing the drums in the school marching band.

But she couldn't go. Not when her mom switched to working nights, and the depression started getting worse. Jamie needed her at home.

One day hanging out with her BFF Chloe and Marcus, Marcus showed Riley a flier. A local band was looking for a drummer. If Riley couldn't be in the marching band, they knew she'd ROCK at being a drummer in a band!

Riley didn't want to try out. Things were too stressful for her right now, but once Marcus talked her into going to check out the band, she had a change of heart.

At the tryouts - she kicked butt! Riley knows her beat and looses herself in that bubble that can only make her and her music the only thing that matters.

Meeting the band members, Sam, Justin and Romeo. Romeo was kind of a jerk. He didn't want a girl in the band. yes that's sexist, but at least he's honest. He knew she would cause trouble with the other guys flirting with her.

Riley didn't know what to think of Romeo - yes he was hot, any girl with a pulse could see that. But he was a jerk.. after awhile though, it seemed he was a jerk... only to her. And she couldn't figure out why.

After their first gig, they head over to Sam's for an after party. Riley goes with her friends and hangs out. Seeing her ex there kind of kills her mood for a party, so she heads back to her BFF's dorm room where they were going to stay the night. umm unfortunately for Riley, the room was being used..

Hanging out in the parking lot, waiting for her friends to , umm.. finish - Romeo sees her sitting alone . He offers to let her come up to his dorm and wait for her friends.

What do you get when you mix a cute drummer, a really HOT guitarist and a lot of alcohol? Yes! THEY KISS!!

Regrets turn into regretting their regrets, and so on.

There is more to Romeo then Riley sees though. He's such a jerk to her at practices, but when they actually spend some time together, he is really a sweetheart! And when he finds out more about Riley's family then she wants to admit to anyone else, he seems to understand her a little more.

But when Riley's mom gets a little more depressed, and things start to get out of hand, Riley knows she has to make another sacrifice.

And now she has to give up the only thing that makes her happy.

GREAT story! I really loved this! Riley wasn't a Rocker punk - and neither was any of the other guys in the band. Ok Justin might be a huge player, but still - these guys were down to earth collage students who liked to play for fun.

Defiantly one I'll be recommending :)

Juls Review
i'm seriously doing a happy dance right now :D I absolutely loved this book. I couldnt put it down!

I loved Riley and how much she loved her family, enough so she sacrificed her future to be there for them. She had so much potential and yet she blossomed where she ended up. She was such a strong character that you cant help but root for her.

As much as Riley does for her family her home life really sucks. In order to keep a bit of her sanity she decides to try out for a local band. The band hears her talent and reluctantly the band leader Romeo says yes to bring her on.

Romeo has reservations about bringing this chick into their fold. Not because she's bad because she's amazing and beautiful and he cant take his eyes off of her. But he sees her as a crutch to bring the band down.
Romeo is so enamored by her and that scares him. He's vowed to do everything in his power to get rid of her. Their power struggles turns into something they never expected. Something blooms between the two and they cant help but be drawn to each other.

Will their connection be enough to stay together or will reality bite them in the ass?
