One Small Thing by Piper Vaughn

One Small ThingOne Small Thing by Piper Vaughn

Can I get an AAAWWWW with another side of AAAWWWW? This book couldnt have been sweeter!

"Daddy" is not a title Rue Murray wanted, but he never thought he'd have sex with a woman either. Now he's the unwitting father of a newborn named Alice. Between bartending and cosmetology school, Rue doesn't have time for babies, but he can't give her up. What Rue needs is a babysitter, and he's running out of options. He's on the verge of quitting school to watch Alice himself when he remembers his reclusive new neighbor, Erik. Erik Van Nuys is a sci-fi novelist with anxiety issues to spare. He doesn't like people in general, and he likes babies even less. Still, with his royalties dwindling, he could use the extra cash. Reluctantly, he takes on the role of manny-and even more reluctantly, he finds himself falling for Alice and her flamboyant father. Rue and Erik are as different as two people can be, and Alice is the unlikeliest of babies, but Rue has never been happier than when Alice and Erik are by his side. At least, not until he receives an offer that puts all his dreams within reach and he's forced to choose: the future he's always wanted, or the family he thought he never did

Jen's Review

I loved this story a LOT!

I really love stories that involve babies and the sweetest man! Rue! What a sweetheart from the start!

Shaking his way at the bar, flirting with the regulars at the Tom Tom Club where Rue works, his life was pretty good, up until Natalie's voice startled him out of his funk.

She was his one time, "really drunk and wanting to see if he preferred woman" night stand... Nope, not even a little bit.
But Natalie had a shock of her own from that night 3 months ago. She's pregnant. And she isn't mommy material. She lets Rue know right off she's going to have the baby, but if he didn't want it, she was going to put it up for adoption.
Rue though really hard for all of 3 seconds before saying he'll take the baby.
He knew he should have thought about it first, but growing up without the love of his parents, he couldn't think of having HIS baby in the system.
She he knew it was the right thing to do...
Right of wrong, 6 months later, Rue had a baby girl, and no amount of childhood preparedness classes or Interest searches could really prepare him for this real live baby!

Dusty, Dusty, Dusty. What a sweetheart, too.

Dusty is Rue's best friend since.. forever ago. Since Rue has always been a player, never in his life has he had a relationship, Dusty was the exception. This one guy who he could count on.

So when Rue brought home this bundle of Pink, Dusty was there to help. But when Dusty went back home to Gary, his boyfriend, Rue realized just what he got himself into...

He had one week until he had to go back to beauty college. He was determined to finish out his collage, and get a job in sunny California and style the celebrates hair. But he needed someone to watch Alice while he was at school.. what to do???

Erik - Good ol' Erik. Erik lives alone. He prefers it that way. He hates change, so when he was forced to move into an apartment instead of the house he rented for so many years, he was still struggling with the change.

And when someone started knocking on his door, he started to panic. People weren't his thing. He didn't like to go out to grocery stores, or pretty much anywhere, because he didn't want to be around people.

But when Rue showed up with something pink in his hands, knowing that he was an author who wrote at home and didn't like to leave his house, Erik started getting a little nervous.

Rue was desperate. $400 a month to babysit his daughter while he was at school, But Erik wasn't a people person, let alone a baby person. $600 - Rue could work extra hours, sure, but Erik wasn't going to give.. sure he needed the money, but .. a baby?? No way.

Rue left looking around at Day-cares, crazed with vomit infested, stale apple juice, screaming toddlers, or homophobic people not interested in helping him out. Rue got even more desperate.

Leaving posters around the apartment building, raising the price up to $750 now.

Erik started noticing the fliers, but when he heard the old lady in the laundry room saying how awful it was that Rue lived his lifestyle, but could use the money herself, Erik couldn't stand letting a stranger near that baby!

So Erik took the job. Rue was happy. and with the help of both Erik and Dusty, Rue was able to go to school during the week and work at the Tom Tom earning really good tips.

Time creeps on and Erik finds himself Friends with Dusty and Rue. How that happened he didn't know. But he was.

He had finally heard back from his editor, and even though he liked the sci fic in the book, he wanted Erik to make a few minor adjustments... lol Erik found himself in need of a LOT of reading research :)

Great story - I really loved watching Erik grow up in this relationship, and watching Rue settle down :)

This was probably by far one of the best M/M books I've read :)

Jul's Review
Can I get an AAAWWWW with another side of AAAWWWW? This book couldnt have been sweeter!
You bring a flamboyant and colorful guy and a star wars geek and you make one of the most beautiful and loving stories EVER!
Rue might have only been looking for a baby sitter for his daughter but he got so much more from Erik.
Erik hated anything new and Rue and Alice were new and very unfamiliar. A moment of clarity brings the three together.
Erik's uncertainties put a damper on things towards the end but like the saying "mommy knows best" it rang very true!

I also loved Dusty and I really hope he finds his HEA
