The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay

The Sea of TranquilityThe Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I live in a world without magic or miracles. A place where there are no clairvoyants or shapeshifters, no angels or superhuman boys to save you. A place where people die and music disintegrates and things suck. I am pressed so hard against the earth by the weight of reality that some days I wonder how I am still able to lift my feet to walk.

Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her—her identity, her spirit, her will to live—pay.

Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at seventeen years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.

Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life. But the more he gets to know her, the more of an enigma she becomes. As their relationship intensifies and the unanswered questions begin to pile up, he starts to wonder if he will ever learn the secrets she’s been hiding—or if he even wants to.

The Sea of Tranquility is a rich, intense, and brilliantly imagined story about a lonely boy, an emotionally fragile girl, and the miracle of second chances.

Juls Review

WoW!!!! What a powerful book! I'm still in awe over this book. I have to give major props to the author. She really has an amazing way of showing that there is always light at the end of the dark and scary tunnel.

Nastya is the new girl and the way she looks gets everyone's attention. Not the attention that is preferred but attention all the same. The more uncomfortable she feels the better. She almost thrives on it. And not that her appearance doesnt make her stick out like a sore thumb she also doesnt talk. It may sound harsh of me phrasing it that way but with her and what she went through three years ago she has decided to not talk anymore. She's not the only one this affect. This has put a huge gap between her and her family.

Nastya moves in with her Aunt Margo and tries to start a new life. In her quest to be noticed for what she's not Nastya takes notice of the one person who she hasnt even given her a side ways glance.

His name is Josh and Nastya wants what he's got going on. No one bothers him, no one looks at him, everyone leaves him alone.

Josh's past may be out in the open for all to see but after the trauma he endures with the loss of his loved one he's buried so far into himself that no is able to break that shell. Or so he thought.

An accidental meeting leads into a silent agreement for Josh and Nastya and without words they create a comfortable existence amongst each other. Together they find comfort and a love so powerful you question if they are old enough to have found something this strong.

Along the way, the people that Nastya comes in contact with learn to accept what they dont have in their control but more so is true for Nastya.

If you are looking for a book to end this year on a good note, this is the book to pick up. Great great read!

Jen's Review

I don't think there could be a bad review for this book - It just went straight to the top of my favorites list after that ending :)

This book is so raw with emotions, the reality of it just blows me away.

Nastya - where to begin with her. She is awesome! My idle actually. To go through what she went through, and still be able to survive, just.. wow.
Something happened to her a few years ago. and since her memory returned to her almost 2 years ago, she hasn't spoken to a single person. She didn't want to tell anyone what happened, so she didn't tell anyone anything.. at all .

When she's ready to go back to school for her senior year, she gets her parents to let her start over in a new town living with her Aunt. The New principal doesn't know what to think of her not talking, but has agreed to leave notes with all her new teachers letting them know.

As she's walking out of the office, she meets Drew - and LOL the chemistry between Nastya and Drew is so much fun to read about. He's actually a pretty decent guy.

after school starts, the first day of school is the hardest for Nastya. She wants to be ignored and doesn't want to draw attention to herself. At lunch when she sees the courtyard filled with people everywhere.. everywhere except that one table where there is one guy, alone, like he has a force field.. and she wants a force field like that.

School becomes a drag but she manages to hide out and ignore just about everyone. Everyone but Drew that is. Because Drew isn't ignoring her like he's supposed to be. But she kind of likes the way he flirts with her.

After a couple of weeks, her pent up energy starts to get to her. The rain is finally stopped and she is able to throw on her tennis shoes and go for a run. After her run she realizes she's in a new part of the neighborhood and she's lost. Walking around, she sees a garage door open. Walking up she realizes it's Josh's garage, she won’t speak to him, but she watches him...

Drew screws up and pisses Nastya off.. his way of apologizing. Inviting her over to a Family dinner one Sunday. But he did it in front of her aunt, so she had to go.

Since Drew and Josh were Best friends, and Josh was like a member of the family. he was at Sunday dinner as well. Drew's mom took a special likening to Nastya, and was invited over again next week.

Nastya started making it a habit to stop by josh's garage a few nights after her run. Just watching him. Making him nervous.

Josh is a great guy Lots of bad luck comes his way through. He's now alone in life and does what he can to make sure it stays that way. He's afraid to let anyone in. But when Nastya starts hanging around him.. he really doesn’t' know what to do.

And when Nastya starts talking to Josh... that’s just a special secret that no one will ever find out.

The way these two got together, the way they grew stronger and happier while they were together. it just truly made the whole book. When Nastya tries to see reality, Josh is there to stabilize her. But she's not able to tell him her true secret.

This is a long story, but really worth every word on the pages :)

Awesome story! Totally recommended by me to everyone!!
