Ten Tiny Breaths by K.A. Tucker

Ten Tiny Breaths (Ten Tiny Breaths, #1)
Ten Tiny Breaths by K.A. Tucker

Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.

Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.

But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgiveable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.(

Jen's Review

Such a cute story! I totally loved this!

The twist at the end caught me off guard too :) Loved that!

Kasey and her sister Livia are finished with Michigan, and their Aunt and Uncle -
That night of Kasey's car accident totally screwed her life up. And it was time to get her 15 year old sister and start fresh. She was old enough to be her sister's guardian, and she would do anything to make Livia happy.

Living Kasey's life isn't easy. Her nightmares every night have her reliving the incident over and over again. She's doing the best she can.

Living in a dump, eating nothing but Bologna and Spam for awhile, trying to figure out how to live on a Starbucks salary.

When she meets her drop dead gorgeous neighbor and her sweetest as can be 5 year old daughter, all Kasey's walls go up. She isn't here to make friends. Friends try to learn about the past, and eventually, they leave.

But Livia falls in love with Mia, the 5 year old girl, which means that the neighbors are now they're new best friends. Rather Kasey wants to be or not.

On the other side of the wall, is the hot gorgeous new tenant. And he always seems to find Kasey in the laundry room :)

The chemistry between these two is instant, and confusing to Kasey. She doesn't understand why she's leaning towards him when all she wants to do is run away from him. She's not innocent. After the accident, she lost herself in drugs, booze and sex. But she's been clean for over 2 years now and swore to Livia she was done with that.

Kasey's relationship builds strong with Storm and Mia and soon Kasey is working a new job with Storm. Something she never thought she'd end up doing, but Storm wsa right - the tips pay more than she could ever imagine. And kasey's main goal was to make Livia's life happy. So she took the job.

Seeing Trent at her new job was comforting, yet strange - she tried hard to ignore him sitting there.. and all the girls trying to coax him into a "dance". But he just sat there, watching her instead of the entertainment going on all around him.

Things started to heat up when Kasey was taking her long shower, and when she opened her eyes, she found a little surprise that scared the crap out her. Screaming her head off, she lost all sense of reality except where her eyes focused!
Next thing she knew big strong hands wrapped around her body and a towl thrown over her.

Their relationship went up and down and up and down. Kasey couldn't figure out why she was so drawn to him, but was afraid of getting close to him, anyone! But once she realized it was a lost cause, she caved and let herself go.

Only to find out Trent wants to take things slow ...

Really cute story - I totally loved the fact that she got to know Storm and Mia and got everything started in gaining her life back before the whole romance part took place. Gave it more of a story feel to it.
I also loved Storm - she is a sweetheart and you can tell that she would do anything for her friends and loved ones.

Then you get to see the side characters, Cain, Nate and Ben - the bouncers from work - totally not what you'd expect from those types of guys :)

But what I really liked was the real feeling you got out of the book. I kind of rolled my eyes when she relieved why she was so unforgiving about her past, but after reading on, you slowly start to see why she's thinking this way.
PTSD is a killer - literally, and it's not something someone just gets over without help. It just hangs around eating you up inside even when you think you can handle things.

Yes I cried - given the tragedy of what happened to Kasey and the way it was screwing her up inside. But once she was able to let go and fall in love with Trent, she started seeing her old self again. The happy girl she use to be...

Read the story to find out what happens at the end - you'll totally love this story :D
